What’s better than a fresh new mani? Nothing. Which is exactly why a gal’s got to nail her mani process to keep her paws in tip top shape just in time for the new year. Whether you’re an acrylics gal, a gel lover or one who decides to roll up her sleeves and tackle it head on, these tips are sure to provide you with fabulous manicures for many, many years to come.

Do: be patient. Practice is key for pulling off the perfect polish job. Use a stable surface like a table and rest your non-dominate elbow or arm on the table to avoid shaking. Thin layers should do the trick.

Don’t: forget about your base coat. “Make sure to shorten, shape, and clean nails before polishing. Don’t skip the base coat because it will help smooth out ridges and give you a more professional look”, a manicurist to the stars tells Glamour.

Do: use the proper tools. If you thought your polish and some cotton swabs was enough to get the job done, you may be in the wrong. Some recommend using a fine grit file, polish remover, cotton, an orange wood stick, as well as a small brush like the angled one used for makeup. Throw a lotion or scrub into the mix to get the salon look in a flash.

Don’t: forget to ditch your nail polish before soaking nails. Experts suggest using an actual manicure soak to soften the skin and whiten your nails.

Do: pay attention to what side of the brush you’re using. One manicurist told Glamour magazine, “By wiping the brush on the lip of the bottle and then using the non-wiped side, you’ll allow the excess product to be pulled off the brush so you won’t have any dripping.”

  3. The base coat is the most important. I remb. I once forgot it and my nails turned out horribly. NEVEER FORGET THE BASE COAT!!! lol :)

  4. I never do my own nails. I am way to chicken. I promised myself I would try. Any suggestions for a rookie?
