Home / Makeup / How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Last week, we told you guys what we thought our five must have makeup brushes were. Makeup brushes are so important for creating your overall look and  it’s important to have a fantastic set of brushes that can help you in your application. However, it’s equally as important to take care of those brushes to make sure that you’re getting the best possible use out of them. Makeup brushes can be an investment and it’s important to clean and store them correctly so that you’re getting the most out of your money. Uncleaned brushes can result in uneven application, in ruining your products if you dip them directly into the makeup, and they can wreak havoc on your skin. To prevent these things from happening, make sure to follow our guide to maintaining your brushes.

First off, you can use a daily cleanser that you can spray onto your brushes immediately after you’ve used them. The daily cleanser will ensure that any bacteria on your brushes is killed off right away. It’s a great way to keep your brushes clean on a regular basis without investing a ton of time or effort into it. You can find daily cleansers in almost any makeup store like Sephora and Ulta Beauty. If you can’t come across one, baby oil is a great substitute.

While a daily cleanser is great, it’s important to give your brushes a deep cleaning every week to ensure that you’re getting all of the germs out of your brushes. You can use a baby shampoo to clean your brushes but keep in mind that this will not disinfect them. If you’re looking for a substance to clean your brushes  that’s more effective than baby shampoo but not as expensive as a brush shampoo, try mixing together olive oil and dish-washing soap in equal parts. Swirl your brushes in a circular motion in the mixture. Don’t forget to wipe the brush on your hand in a back and forth motion to get the makeup in between the bristles out. Next, rinse your brushes in water until they are completely clean. Don’t use hot water because this could ruin the quality of your brushes. Once you’ve finished rinsing them place the brushes flat on a paper towel and allow them to dry.

Once your brushes have dried completely, store them upright on your vanity. Place them in a jar or vase to add a decorative touch!
